Training Philosophy

Individualized Approach

I believe in taking the time to get to know my clients: both two-legged and four-legged. By learning a client’s training goals, motivators and personality I am able to more readily collaborate effectively and find the most effective approach to use. This is crucial, as one size does not fit all.

Only through understanding the individual dog can the most appropriate modality or modalities be determined. Any behavioral change modality that is employed universally to all dogs, is guaranteed not to be the best approach for every single dog that it is applied to. An individualized approach ensures a more pleasant experience in achieving desired results.

Evidence-based

I use evidence-based training modalities.  A big part of this is staying up to date with the latest research, so that with relevant advances my training can reflect these advances.

Evidence shows that dogs, much like humans, learn more quickly with rewards-based training. Positive reinforcement, consistency & socialization allow for achievement of desired behaviors without the long-term negative effects associated with the use of aversives. Training should build an understanding between dog and human, it should strengthen the bond.
